The disciples made a seemingly innocent and casual remark about the magnificent stones and wonderful buildings that made up the temple complex in Jerusalem, to which Jesus felt obligated to knock the wind out of their sails. “Not one stone left on top of another.” Jesus is obviously not as impressed with the accomplishments of men as these men were.
He’s not so impressed by magnificent stones cut by human hands because His hands formed the mountains that those stones were cut from. The beautiful buildings that man has built are not so impressive to Him who made the men who built those buildings. Better to be impressed with the Creator than with the creation.
