8/22/21 – Pentecost 13 – “Doing vs. Being” – Mark 7:1-13

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

1. Our text for this morning is the Gospel Reading from Mark chapter 7. At the beginning of this reading, we see the Pharisees and Scribes come from Jerusalem to confront Jesus. They are essentially an official fact-finding commission of theologians. But we see clearly from the start that they are biased and suspicious. You could say that they have a fault-finding attitude, as usually is the case when the Pharisees interact with Jesus. But this shouldn’t surprise us. Continue reading

8/8/21 – Pentecost 11 – “Satisfied” – John 6:35-51

Have you ever seen those videos of things that are oddly satisfying? They’re all over social media on Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok, and they’re videos of things that we as people find satisfying to watch. The people in the videos might be power washing a wall covered in dirt, or laying down tiles that all come together in a pattern, or they organize a space in a way that makes everything fit perfectly together. Even if you’ve never seen videos like this, you know what it feels like to do something that gives you satisfaction. Continue reading

8/1/21 – Pentecost 10 – “The Gift of Unity” – Ephesians 4:1-16

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

1. Our text for this morning is the Epistle Reading from Ephesians 4. We will especially be focusing on verses 11-16. But before we can zero in on those verses, I want to take a few moments to summarize what happens in verses 1-10, which are important to setting up our portion of the text. St. Paul begins Ephesians chapter 4 with a call to be a person of unity. He says, “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to talk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called…eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:1, 3). 7/25/21 – St. James the Elder, Apostle – “Clinging to Christ” – Acts 12:1-5

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Our text for today is Acts 12:1-5:
About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword, and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.

1. Today we celebrate the Festival of St. James the Elder, Apostle. There is more than one James in the Bible, so let’s be clear on who we’re talking about. James the Elder was the son of Zebedee and the old brother of the Gospel writer John. He was also one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. Continue reading

7/18/21 – Pentecost 8 – “Rest and Hope at the Lord’s Table” – Mark 6:30-44

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

1. There’s something special about sitting around a table and eating with others, isn’t there? I’ve been reminded of this a number of times recently. A couple of weeks ago, my family was on vacation visiting family and friends in the Midwest. While we were there, we had the opportunity to go to a friend’s wedding reception. And while we were at the reception, we had a chance to sit around a big round table and eat dinner with some friends that we hadn’t seen in quite a while. There’s something special about sharing a meal with those old friends that allows you to re-connect in a special way. Continue reading

7/11/21 – Pentecost 7 – “The Covenant Standard” – Amos 7:7-9

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

1. One of the most used tools is my trusty level. The cool thing about this level is that I can use it to determine if something is level (that is, straight horizontally) or I can use it to determine if something is plumb (that is, straight vertically). I used it just yesterday when Matthew and I were fixing one of our back steps that had busted. I can’t tell you how many times I have used it simply as a straight edge. But in the last year, I have probably used my level most for hanging pictures. And I have to admit, I’ve never liked hanging pictures. Several months ago I had an experience hanging a picture that exemplifies why I don’t like hanging pictures. Continue reading

6/27/21 – Pentecost 5 – “Saved by Faith” – Mark 5:21-43

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

1. Our text for today is from Mark 5:21-43. Today’s Gospel Reading picks up a little bit after last week’s reading. You might remember last week’s Gospel Reading—the famous story of Jesus calming the storm. It’s the story where Jesus and his disciples are going to cross over the Sea of Galilee. Jesus is tired, so he decides to take a nap on the boat. But while they’re in the middle of the lake, a storm breaks out. The wind and the waves are crashing against the boat and the disciples are starting the freak out because they think the boat is going to capsize. Continue reading

6/20/21 – Pentecost 4 – “Trust Amid Suffering” – Job 38:1-11

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

1. Our text for this morning is the Old Testament Reading from Job 38. This moment in the book of Job occurs toward the end of the book—it’s the beginning of the end, really. So, to fully understand and appreciate today’s text, we need to go back and understand the context of Job’s story. In the book of Job, we are invited into Job’s suffering so that we might learn from it. Continue reading
